Audio commentary

Berette S Macaulay’s work interrogates the liminal points of va1 – “in-betweenness” – a personal existence of Black multiplicity, trans*nationality, and trans*cultural negotiations of identity.  This shapeshifting embodiment is present in her family history, the post-colonial geographies she occupies, and in her chosen practices. Her Metamorphic Return to Fusion project utilizes a memory installation of disjointed family artefacts, photography, video, performance, poetry, and mask sculpture, to assert the right to alternative Beingness and il/legibility as an intentional tool of agency for Other-ed people.

These  works  focus on women’s labor, dress, domestic work and photography of black women suffragists of the early 20th century. This work includes my own photographs and images from the archives of women suffragists who carried banners, wore dresses, comfy and fancy shoes in marches and at meetings to discuss their right to vote in American.

Jaimee Todd specializes in abstract photography that she refers to as Inkscapes  which is an exploration into creating colorful and spontaneous abstract forms by photographing different pigments that have been submerged in water. She utilizes digital manipulation of these photographs to create contrasts in form and hue reminiscent of abstract expressionism.

My work uses children to explore creolization, and integration of found objects as artifacts and conduits of memory. Children are conjurers, welcoming with their innocence and purity, a spirit open to ancestors and a reclaiming of their history. Hybridization of African cultural traditions and those of the Americas act as a means of survival, subversive rebellion and autonomy from those that would otherwise oppress them. 

A communing with Ancestors

See What I Say reveals the artistic visual expression of women and non-binary photographers of African descent. This exhibition emphasizes the diverse way in which each photographer approaches subject matter and represents their world view.
