Audio commentary

These drawings, related to the series of paintings "Al despertar, flotaban", are made on the paper sheets of an old philately album. The artist found them years ago in his father's house, removed the stamps and cleaned the papers that years later would become the support, the body of these drawings. There are marks of his father's work on every sheet, on what was once an album. They are a long-distance tribute dedicated to his father. The color emanating from the pencils fills every page and the unwritten message is chromatic, becoming a family message, an intimate one, bringing together in color what wasn’t said.

Questi disegni, legati alla serie di dipinti "Al despertar, flotaban", sono realizzati sui fogli di un vecchio album di filatelia. L’artista li ha trovati anni fa nella casa di suo padre, ha tolto i francobolli e pulito i fogli che anni dopo ne sarebbero diventati il supporto, il corpo di questi disegni. Ci sono i segni del lavoro di suo padre su ogni foglio, su quello che una volta era un album. Sono un tributo a distanza dedicato al padre. Il colore che emanano le matite riempie ogni pagina e il messaggio non scritto si rivela nella cromia diventando un messaggio di famiglia, un messaggio intimo, che riunisce nel colore ciò che non è stato detto.

This work gives the title to the exhibition and the entire show is articulated around it. The light in the painting seems to dilute all the forms. The drawing is also attenuated by that particular light that avoids shadows and everything is there to be seen in its entirety. At the same time, the warmth of the light invites us to think that all that we see is unreal. That state of vision that surprises us on many occasions in our life and has something warm that embraces us. There is also a subtle horizon in this work, as if our gaze could reach distant borders.

Quest'opera dà il titolo alla mostra e intorno ad essa si articola l’intera esposizione. La luce nel dipinto sembra diluire tutte le forme presenti. Il disegno è attenuato anche da quella luce particolare che evita le ombre e lascia vedere tutto nella sua interezza. Allo stesso tempo, il calore della luce ci induce a pensare che tutto ciò che vediamo è irreale. Quello stato di visione che in molte occasioni nella nostra vita ci sorprende e ha qualcosa di caldo che ci abbraccia. C'è anche un sottile orizzonte in questo lavoro, come se la nostra visione potesse raggiungere confini lontani.

Abrigo de luz

The blue light, which appears as a group of shapes behind another group of earth colors, is presented in this work with the intensity of a clean sky. Like an omen of a place where we can live but that we don’t know yet, as the title suggest. Our gaze falls into the blue of the sky but here, the cerulean pigment acts as a flat field with the eccentric property of capturing our gaze.

La luce blu, che appare come un gruppo di forme dietro un altro gruppo dai colori terra, si presenta in quest'opera con l'intensità di un cielo limpido. Auspicio di un luogo che possiamo abitare ma che ancora non conosciamo, come suggerisce il titolo. Il nostro sguardo sprofonda nell'azzurro del cielo, però qui il pigmento ceruleo ci riporta in superficie con l'eccentrico compito di catturare il nostro sguardo.

Luz azul, otro planeta

From Alejandro Corujeira’s letter: “The idea to invite Giorgio Griffa to participate in the exhibition, in addition to my admiration and interest for his work, is because I feel that an intense brightness burst through his painting as well. In his case, light is dressed with simplicity and presents itself to us in an extremely warm way. I see them as canvases hanging on a wall to give us shelter”.

Da una lettera di Alejandro Corujeira: “L'idea di invitare Giorgio Griffa a partecipare alla mostra, oltre all’ammirazione e al grande interesse per il suo lavoro, è perché reputo che anche nella sua pittura irrompa un'intensa luminosità. Nel suo caso si veste di semplicità e si manifesta in modo estremamente caloroso. Leggo le sue opere come tele stese su un muro, anch’esse capaci di darci riparo”.

Linee orizzontali

This work belongs to a recent series in which the whole space becomes more complex. Three groups of forms relate to each other, seeking their own place and blending with each other. Color creates layers of vision but the lines that define those shapes are all on the same level, like an imaginary handwriting.

Quest'opera appartiene a una serie recente in cui l'intero spazio diventa più complesso. Tre gruppi di forme si relazionano tra loro, cercando il proprio posto e compenetrandosi a vicenda. Il colore crea strati di visione ma le linee che definiscono quelle forme sono tutte sullo stesso piano, come una calligrafia immaginaria.

Diversidad

This work is related to "Diversidad". From the formal point of view, both paintings are solved with greater complexity: the groups are divided into three. Although the colors of the forms overlap generating layers of space, the drawing remains on the same level and, as in the other work, becomes an imaginary calligraphy with its own autonomy.

Quest’opera è in relazione con "Diversidad". Dal punto di vista formale, entrambi i dipinti sono risolti con maggiore complessità: i gruppi si dividono in tre. Nonostante i colori delle forme si sovrappongano generando strati di spazio, il disegno rimane sullo stesso piano e, come nell'altra opera, diventa una calligrafia immaginaria con una propria autonomia.

Mundo

The title of the work reveals what is happening in the painting. In many situations, we resort to attitudes that complement the ongoing action. Here the color and shape are reciprocally so close that seem to complement each other but at the same time they move, as if to get away from our gaze. Suddenly our visual consciousness tells us that these two groups of forms are in parallel spaces, they are autonomous no matter how close they are.

Il titolo dell'opera rivela cosa sta accadendo nel dipinto. In molte situazioni ricorriamo ad atteggiamenti che completano l’azione in corso. Qui il colore e la forma, così vicini tra loro, sembrano completarsi a vicenda ma allo stesso tempo si muovono, come per allontanarsi dal nostro sguardo. Improvvisamente la nostra coscienza visiva ci dice che questi due gruppi di forme si trovano in spazi paralleli, sono autonomi e non importa quanto siano vicini.

Mundos Paralelos

On many occasions, images present itself as intuitions, as dreams that have not been fully remembered. In this work, the group of shapes in the background is more diluted, as if it were a distant memory approaching, or perhaps as a dream that we are beginning to recognize. The intensity of the color of the forms in the foreground seems to prevail, as if everything else was just an echo.

In molte occasioni le immagini si presentano come intuizioni, come sogni che non sono stati completamente ricordati. In questo lavoro, il gruppo di forme in secondo piano è diluito, come se fosse un lontano ricordo che si avvicina, o forse come un sogno che stiamo cominciando a riconoscere. L'intensità del colore in primo piano sembra prevalere, come se tutto il resto fosse solo un'eco.

El eco de los sueños

We are so excited to present “Abrigo de Luz”, the first Italian exhibition of argentine artist Alejandro Corujeira, thanks to the collaboration with Cecilia Brunson Projects.
 
At the beginning of our dialogue with Corujeira, we asked which Italian artist he particularly admired. Without hesitation he told us with deep awareness of the work of Giorgio Griffa. We had the chance to put the two artists in conversation and Griffa participates at the show with a "spark": a painting of 1970.

All Corujeira’s canvases in the show were made in 2020. Faced with the uncertainty of these time, the artist asked himself, how could we enliven painting. And so, in this works, a vital energy overflows with a new chromatic intensity, as if painting, beyond the forms, had an impact of light that could protect and embrace us, in Spanish “abrigarnos”.

Siamo felici di presentare “Abrigo de Luz”, la prima mostra in Italia dell'artista argentino Alejandro Corujeira, grazie alla collaborazione con Cecilia Brunson Projects.

Agli inizi del nostro dialogo con Corujeira, gli abbiamo chiesto quale artista italiano ammirasse particolarmente. Senza un attimo di esitazione ci ha raccontato con profonda consapevolezza del lavoro di Giorgio Griffa. Abbiamo avuto la possibilità di mettere in dialogo i due artisti e Griffa partecipa alla mostra con una "scintilla": una tela del 1970.

Tutti i dipinti di Corujeira in mostra sono stati realizzati nel 2020. Di fronte all'incertezza di questi tempi, l'artista si è chiesto come poter animare la pittura affiche essa doni vitalità a chi la osserva. E così, queste opere, grazie a una rinnovata intensità cromatica, sprigionano un'energia vitale, come se la pittura, al di là delle forme, avesse un impatto di luce capace di proteggerci e abbracciarci, in spagnolo “abrigarnos”.
